Christian metal guitarist

Postby puppiesonacid » March 13th, 2010, 10:01 am

I am new to the forum, but I can't post here without expressing that I am a guitar player. I found atomic opera through exploring King's X's origins and while some of my friends think they are just copying them i can hear the similarity's guitar tone wise but I must confess I like the strong spiritual stance these guys have.

I have been hoping to find a group of guys who want to play heavier stuff with christian based lyrical content and live that out in thier lives but many are content just playing at home or in the worship band at church. I have been asked to play at church for a couple years now but don't feel comfortable with the music, it's sometimes not interesting enough although the lyrics that praise God and glorify him are always the main point. I know kemper has written articles about being a christian artist, but does he speak about things like this? looking for insight and wisdom.

thanks,

tony

Tony, a large part of my income, and almost all of my live playing these days, comes from worship leading. Most of what I play I would not listen to. It's formulaic, boring, and imitative. The lyrics are dumb. To a lot of people I work with, a "good" drummer is one who competently executes about 4 ideas and looks a certain way.

I've suffered from artistic blue balls for years. It's terribly frustrating.

All of that to set up this: go play in your Church if they want you to. Leading worship is not about getting your artistic jollies; it's about facilitating the worship of God through song. I may not care to listen to the music, but I always like to play the drums to it. I can enjoy it and enjoy both the work and the craft of doing it. I can be satisfied with it.

If you participate, though, be very careful not to try to impose your idea of what would make it "good" on the music. Serve the people the way the leader asks you to. The way I play drums on a Sunday night is not at all what I would normally play.

thanks for the advice. actually, funny thing happend this weekend. i came across a christian musicians wanted ad and was suprised to find that this guy was a drummer, a committed man of God, and into all the metal/hard rock music that I'm into and has the same feelings about "christian" music as I do. I was kind of spooked out, I've been hoping of finding someone who is like minded in music and faith in Christ for years now. We are going to be getting together this week, I am very curious to see what God brings about from this.

I'll keep you posted.
